What critics said
Critics broadly found the ensemble premise appealing but undermined by sloppy direction, implausible plotting, unevenly interlocked stories, and weak characterization.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The struggling singer, salesman, dysfunctional family performers, and escaped convict travel through separate but converging storylines toward Omaha.
The characters use karaoke as a rare opportunity to express themselves and pursue a form of stardom.
The national karaoke contest gives ordinary people a stage while the film resists treating their enthusiasm as mere ridicule.
