What critics said
Critics generally found the film atmospheric and tautly made but derivative, unimaginatively plotted, and unable to fully deliver either thought-provoking science fiction or satisfying B-movie thrills.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The crew's geological investigation and attempt to collect fossilised bacterial samples directly trigger the survival threat.
A crew member disobeys orders to secure historic scientific glory before the relief crew arrives.
Tantalus Base and the surrounding Martian terrain leave the crew separated from immediate assistance during the outbreak.
The film uses handheld, unstable imagery to heighten the apparent realism of the Mars-base emergencies.
