What critics said
Critics broadly found the film short on suspense and compelling characterization, with one-dimensional characters undermining its horror premise.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The thieves, sheriffs, and diner workers become stranded at a remote desert rest stop while the Reeker stalks them.
The Reeker is explicitly presented as an odoriferous fiend, making stench part of the creature's horror identity.
The Death Valley Drifter's 1978 capture and death sentence establish the backstory for the later supernatural threat.
Casino robbers and sheriffs are trapped together after a shootout and must contend with the same pursuing monster.
