What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Spud's anxiety about still not reaching puberty drives his self-consciousness and sense of abnormality.
The Crazy Eight, the Normal Seven, prefect politics, punishments, and the house play organize the film's comic world.
Spud's friendships with Rambo, Simon, Fatty, and Rain Man propel misguided adventures and mutual loyalty.
The 1991 setting combines a changing South African society with parental emigration plans, domestic moonshine, and schoolboy uncertainty.
