What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Anabelle returns to life on Elvis's embalming table, making supernatural rebirth the story's central romantic mechanism.
The Texas setting, funeral home, family wounds, death imagery, and dreamlike love story create a distinctly southern gothic register.
Anabelle's pageant conditioning and her mother's ambitions are contrasted with her pursuit of freedom after resurrection.
Elvis's work embalming the dead and the family's funeral home provide the intimate setting where the romance begins.
