What critics said
Critics found the film stylish and occasionally clever, especially in its dialogue, performances, and female-centered perspective, but felt its horror-comedy balance was inconsistent.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Jennifer's possession turns teenage sexuality and appetite into the film's central supernatural danger.
Needy and Jennifer's best-friend relationship drives both the killings and Needy's attempt to intervene.
The film pairs a bloodthirsty cheerleader, pop-cultural banter, and stylized gore with an overtly playful sensibility.
Needy's opening narration and institutionalized present frame the earlier events at Devil's Kettle.
