What critics said
Critics broadly praised Annette Bening and Ed Harris for powerful performances but found the scattershot script and aimless direction weakened the romantic drama.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Nikki is drawn to Tom because he bears an uncanny resemblance to her late husband Garrett.
The central dramatic tension depends on Nikki treating Tom through the psychological lens of her dead husband.
The protagonist is a widow still mourning her husband five years after his death when she encounters Tom.
Ed Harris plays both Garrett and Tom, making the resemblance central to Nikki's perception and the film's premise.
