What critics said
Critics generally found the film harmless, kid-friendly, and intermittently amusing, but too conventional and unimaginative to rise above routine family adventure.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Tom, Jake, and the other young characters organize a defense after the aliens' mind-control weapon compromises the adults.
The invasion weapon controls adults but leaves children unaffected, creating the film's central reversal of family authority.
The rented old lake house becomes both the aliens' base of operations and the children's defensive stronghold.
The film combines live-action family performances with digitally created alien invaders and effects-driven action.
