What critics said
Critics generally found the film harmlessly entertaining and affectionately campy, while faulting its sloppy, dated slapstick execution.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Elvira's flamboyant persona, the haunted Carpathian castle, and broad performances turn classic gothic material into deliberately camp comedy.
The story strands Elvira and Zou Zou overnight at Lord Hellsubus's eerie castle, whose owners and missing wife drive the mystery.
The 1851 Carpathian setting, aristocratic household, physician, mysterious wife, and can-can-bound heroine are framed as exaggerated period melodrama.
Elvira's openly sexy, assertive persona remains the central comic force as she navigates the male-controlled Hellsubus household.
