What critics said
Critics broadly admire the film's distinctive art-house slasher experiment, dreamlike atmosphere, crisp camerawork, and inventive gore, while finding its austere pacing and divisive ending less conventionally entertaining.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The camera follows Johnny through the forest for long stretches, often withholding conventional victim-centered coverage and dialogue-driven momentum.
Dreamlike atmosphere, crisp camerawork, and somnambulant pacing coexist with outrageous practical kills and body mutilation.
The Ontario woodland is rendered as tranquil and beautiful while Johnny's pursuit produces graphic violence within the same calm visual field.
The resurrected killer, remote victims, ranger, locket, and serial-killer mythology invoke classic slashers, while the stripped-down execution resists their usual formula.
