What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Sophia's marriage to the wealthy Cornelis Sandvoort protects her from poverty while denying her autonomy and helping drive her affair with Jan.
Sophia and Jan enter the tulip bulb market hoping extraordinary profits will purchase freedom from Cornelis's control.
Jan's commissioned portrait of Sophia initiates the lovers' connection, while painting and tulips repeatedly frame beauty, possession, and longing.
The lovers' escape plan depends on Amsterdam's frenzied seventeenth-century tulip bulb speculation.
