What critics said
Critics broadly regarded the film as a serious misfire whose dark comedy and sentimentality clash rather than cohere, despite Seann William Scott's understated performance.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Ted's suicidal plan and confrontations with his family are repeatedly framed through coarse, darkly comic exchanges.
Ted goes home specifically to face those he blames for turning him into an emotionally empty adult.
The plot begins with Ted deciding to kill himself but charts how involvement in his family's chaotic lives gives him a reason to continue.
The film alternates between Ted's serious despair and nutty, raunchy family farce, a tension emphasized in the critical reception.
