What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Mei Li's traditional family values are contrasted with her growing fascination with American culture and the modern social world around Sammy Fong's nightclub.
The film emphasizes opulent production design and memorable song-and-dance sequences, a quality noted in contemporary criticism of its sheer glamour and scale.
Mei Li arrives to marry Sammy Fong by arrangement, while Sammy is attracted to his star singer Linda Low, creating the central romantic conflict.
The film gives Asian American performers major singing, dancing, and comic roles while later critics and Asian-American viewers objected to stereotypes and casting choices.
