What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Brian and Arielle meet specifically during the French cinq-a-sept period, making the affair's schedule a defining structural and thematic motif.
The affair brings Brian's American worldview into sustained contact with Arielle and Valery's French social codes, including views on marriage and food.
Brian is an aspiring novelist whose developing affair becomes inseparable from his attempts to interpret love, ethics, and personal experience as a writer.
The film's hazy cinematography, classical score, costumes, and production design create an attractively old-fashioned romantic atmosphere.
