What critics said
Critics broadly praised the film as a sharply acted, visually distinctive, and emotionally resonant satire of suburban conformity and middle-class discontent.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The Burnhams and Fittses inhabit carefully maintained suburban homes whose surfaces contrast with private alienation, repression, and conflict.
The film repeatedly elevates roses, neighborhood rituals, and a plastic bag moving in the wind into counterpoints to manufactured status and beauty.
Lester abandons his passive routine, quits performing workplace conformity, and pursues a radically renewed identity after confronting his dissatisfaction.
Lester, Carolyn, Jane, and the Fitts family each maintain outward roles that conceal fear, desire, resentment, or vulnerability.
