What critics said
Critics broadly regarded the film as cheap-looking, formulaic, poorly staged, and a particularly weak entry in the American Ninja series.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Sean and Jackson confront Cobra's bands of ninjas through repeated hand-to-hand fights and weapons-based action.
Cobra infects Sean with a virus, making the effort to defeat the antagonist also a race to save Sean's life.
The film pairs exaggerated ninja battles with a virus plot and a flamboyant villain in a knowingly outsized action framework.
Contemporary critical reception specifically characterized the picture as cheap-looking while discussing its staged chop-socky violence.
