What critics said
Critics broadly found the parody uneven and the jokes inconsistent, though they acknowledged its playful attitude and comic use of detective conventions.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The film directly parodies late-1980s and early-1990s suspense thrillers and murder mysteries, including Basic Instinct, Sleeping with the Enemy, and Cape Fear.
Ned Ravine is simultaneously a cop and attorney, yet critics describe him as a blockhead and a useful fall guy.
Ned is seduced while his wife Lana is having an affair with mechanic Frank Kelbo, creating the central web of comic infidelity.
The film uses numerous visual gags in the broad style of The Naked Gun while staging detective and murder-mystery scenarios.
