Critics generally value the Marx Brothers' wit and performances, especially Groucho's verbal comedy, while finding the film repetitive and below the group's strongest work.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The Marx Brothers undermine military suspicion, Nazi conspirators, hotel authority, and post-war respectability through verbal and physical comedy.
Ronald Kornblow's sophisticated wisecracks coexist with Corbaccio's scheming and Rusty's nearly silent physical mischief.
The murdered hotel managers, suspected collaborators, concealed identity, and investigation of the war booty organize the farce without becoming a serious procedural.
Ex-Nazi intrigue, accusations of collaboration, and hidden war loot are presented alongside Marx Brothers chaos and deadpan comedy.
