What critics said
Critics broadly found the film a formulaic, trite, and muted historical romance that unconvincingly dramatizes Hemingway's early life.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The narrative follows Ernest Hemingway as a nineteen-year-old ambulance driver before his later literary career.
Young Ernest Hemingway falls in love with nurse Agnes von Kurowsky, who is older and more experienced.
Ernest and Agnes meet in an Italian military hospital during World War I, with the conflict surrounding their relationship.
The film recreates wartime Italy, military service, and hospital romance in a conventional prestige-drama style.
