What critics said
Critics found the film competently made and occasionally entertaining for children, but overly sanitized, formulaic, and tonally ill-suited to its Vietnam War setting.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The PG production turns a Vietnam War mission into an accessible elephant-transport adventure for children and young adults.
The soldiers must acquire an elephant and deliver it across South Vietnam before the village ceremony.
Critics specifically noted the contrast between the Vietnam War backdrop and the sentimentalized family-comedy treatment.
Cahill, Doyle, Poole, Farley, and Ashford face transport failures, personality conflicts, and enemy interference while pursuing the delivery.
