What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Harry Baldwin organizes every decision around his family's survival, even when that means abandoning ordinary moral restraints.
The nuclear attack rapidly transforms roads, towns, and social interactions into arenas of distrust, theft, and predation.
Los Angeles is destroyed offscreen, while the film concentrates on the family's movement through the resulting crisis rather than depicting large-scale destruction.
The blinding flash, nuclear attack, fallout threat, and Cold War setting turn a family vacation into an immediate survival nightmare.
