What critics said
Critics broadly admired the film's striking animation, voice performances, music, and ambition while finding its connective plot overly simplistic and its philosophical passages uneven.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The film includes multiple animator-led sequences, including Joan Gratz's color-bursting clay animation for “On Work.”
Authorities fear Mustafa's words because they may incite rebellion among the people.
Mustafa's reflections unfold as a collection of separate sermons or poetic meditations connected by the journey home.
The poetic passages are rendered through striking, color-rich animation rather than naturalistic scenes alone.
