What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Marie and Aleksei’s marriage is shaped by denunciation, confiscated documents, government agents, and their inability to leave the USSR.
Marie is French while Aleksei has returned to the Soviet Union, and their family becomes trapped between France and Stalinist Russia.
The communal house, denunciations, executions, and forced relocation turn family life into a direct extension of government repression.
The film moves between communal housing, official spaces, Odessa, Kyiv, and swimming-related locations while sustaining a sweeping romantic-drama register.
