What critics said
Critics broadly found the film atmospherically effective and creepy, but divided over its unfocused screenplay and tendency to raise more questions than it answers.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
John's investigation accumulates visions, warnings, and alleged connections without providing a definitive account of the Mothman.
Mark Pellington's direction is noted for agitated camerawork, unusual music, and a sustained dream-like atmosphere surrounding John's experiences.
John's investigation begins after his wife's death and remains intertwined with his struggle to process her absence and the creature she described.
Point Pleasant residents, including Connie Mills and Gordon Smallwood, are connected by reports of the same troubling phenomenon.
