What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Rosario works illegally in the United States while Carlitos remains in Mexico, and both undertake journeys toward reunion.
Nine-year-old Carlitos drives the journey and experiences migration, danger, and separation through a child's viewpoint.
Rosario's unauthorized work in the United States and the obstacles facing mother and son anchor the film's social context.
The plot explicitly presents parallel stories of Rosario and Carlitos as each travels in hopes of reuniting.
