What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The actors begin in a run-down theater as a company rehearsing Uncle Vanya before the film settles into the act-by-act performance.
The unusable stage, crumbling ceiling, missing costumes, and lack of real props become the film's defining visual conditions.
The rehearsal setting gradually recedes as Wallace Shawn, Julianne Moore, Larry Pine, and the ensemble make Chekhov's fictional relationships feel immediate.
The film presents Chekhov's Uncle Vanya nearly act by act, with minimal interruptions and a sustained commitment to the original drama.
