What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Carol's unexplained chemical sensitivity has been read alongside the unspoken threat of the 1980s AIDS crisis and broader fears of environmental contamination.
Carol leaves domestic confinement for Wrenwood, where self-help ideology may replace patriarchal security with another constricting identity.
Carol's immaculate California home, controlled interactions, and chilly presentation externalize her emotional emptiness and isolation.
Wrenwood presents itself as a sanctuary for the environmentally ill but is led by the grandstanding and potentially exploitative Peter Dunning.
