What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The plot concentrates on a demoralized firebase being reorganized before a VietCong assault.
Sergeant major Bill Hafner must whip the base and its personnel into fighting shape.
The overview explicitly frames the film as a rollicking old-time battle story with a hard-tack sergeant and rebellious sidekick.
The film uses the Vietnam War, VietCong control, the Tet Offensive context, and a U.S. Marine firebase as its central cultural frame.
