What critics said
Critics generally found the assured debut compelling in its raw, graphic depiction of youthful hedonism and the collision between exploitation cinema and serious social drama.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Leah's drug use, sexual behavior, and escalating criminal choices are presented in raw, graphic detail that deliberately unsettles.
Leah's middle-class whiteness contrasts with Blue's vulnerability, while lawyers and employers occupy more protected social positions.
Leah initially treats drugs, sex, and dealing as adventurous freedom before Blue's arrest and the cocaine force consequences upon her.
The New York setting and unremittingly cynical treatment of youth culture create a squalid, volatile atmosphere.
