What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Bella's orderly life, literary ambitions, unusual neighbors, and improbable friendship are presented with the structure and charm of a modern fairy tale.
Critics repeatedly describe the film as twee, while its oddball characters, orderly routines, library setting, and gentle fantasy atmosphere reinforce that register.
The central bond joins young aspiring author Bella Brown with cantankerous widower Alfie Stevenson.
Bella's garden and her difficulty maintaining it form a concrete obstacle that connects her personal growth with her developing relationship with Alfie.
