What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The mid-century oil town is rendered with an elegant noir mood while Lou's violence and sexual cruelty steadily contaminate it.
Lou presents himself as a mild-mannered deputy while privately orchestrating murders and manipulating those around him.
Lou's relationship with Joyce combines sex, domination, manipulation, and a revenge scheme that makes her his pawn.
Lou's controlled demeanor and apparent composure conceal the different plan behind the supposed shakedown and the accumulating bodies.
