What critics said
Critics generally found the film a bright, warmly performed update suitable for younger viewers, but considered it too familiar to add much to the classic story.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The Grinch begins as a solitary Christmas-hating outsider and changes after witnessing Cindy-Lou Who's generous holiday spirit.
Whoville, Mt. Crumpet, the Grinch's cave inventions, and the Christmas spectacle are rendered with bright, highly stylized animation.
The film reworks Dr. Seuss's well-known Christmas tale with expanded character material and modern Illumination animation.
The Grinch seeks peace and quiet in his cave while the Whos' increasingly loud Christmas celebrations draw him into communal life.
