What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Nadine's loneliness intensifies when her best friend begins dating her older brother, making social displacement the story's central emotional problem.
Nadine's directness, poor communication, and embarrassing choices generate humor while preserving the seriousness of her distress.
Nadine views her popular older brother Darian as an idealized rival and feels diminished by his closeness with their mother and Krista.
The film places Nadine's friendships, family conflicts, and emerging romance within a contemporary Portland, Oregon high school world.
