What critics said
Critics broadly found the adaptation compelling and well acted, but viewed its glossy, formulaic treatment of domestic abuse as less substantial than its subject warranted.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Lily’s relationship with Ryle is presented through both romantic chemistry and abusive behavior, forcing her to reassess what love means.
Lily opens a flower shop, making floral design and entrepreneurship concrete parts of her effort to build an identity beyond her relationships.
Lily’s memories of her father’s abuse inform her adult relationship and her fear of reproducing familiar harm.
The film pairs serious domestic-abuse themes with an aspirational, stylish romance-drama presentation.
