What critics said
Critics broadly praised the film’s direction, performances, and unsettlingly candid portrait of desire and midlife collapse, while finding its antihero deliberately difficult to sympathize with.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Kostis pursues Anna while the film explicitly contrasts youthful bodies with inevitable physical decay.
Kostis moves from renewed social excitement to drinking, partying, and increasingly obsessive attempts to retain Anna.
The island’s summer beaches and parties provide a vivid counterpoint to Kostis’s humiliating descent.
Critical descriptions emphasize Kostis’s embarrassing vortex of desire and the uncomfortable comedy of his refusal to recognize his decline.
