What critics said
Critics found the film an occasionally eerie and effective fairy-tale revision, but broadly faulted its strained sensationalism, weaker performances, and duller storytelling than its predecessor.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The plot explicitly reworks Hansel and Gretel as a modern escape narrative centered on Crystal and Cyclona.
The protagonists’ crimes, drug use, purging, murders, and grotesque journey drive the film’s confrontational tone.
Cyclona is a psychotic young lesbian, and the film is identified as LGBTQ-related while framing both leads as criminal outsiders.
After escaping incarceration, Crystal and Cyclona travel toward Mexico while leaving violence and drug use behind them.
