What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Zatoichi seeks a peaceful life yet repeatedly intervenes when rival yakuza clans threaten innocent villagers.
The rural power struggle is explicitly fought between rival yakuza bosses while the film retains a jidaigeki setting and sword-based action.
Zatoichi's blindness and peaceful masseur persona contrast sharply with his reputation as a deadly defender.
The title and Zatoichi's blindness foreground darkness as a recurring dramatic context for sword confrontations.
