What critics said
Critics found the central performances compelling and lively, but felt the film was weakened by romantic clichés, uneven supporting characters, and an unconvincing depiction of class divisions.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Max is a young advertising executive while Nora is an older waitress, making their relationship socially unconventional.
The couple's affluent and working-class backgrounds repeatedly pressure their private relationship.
Critics specifically noted the leads' shaggy sense of fun and the spirited, fully formed quality of Sarandon's performance.
Nora's fixation on Marilyn Monroe is an explicit character detail and a distinctive motif in her self-presentation.
