What critics said
Critics broadly viewed the film as a disappointing attempt to combine social satire, racial commentary, and murder mystery, though some found it watchable and stylistically recognizable.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Suburbicon's manicured lawns and friendly civic image conceal both racist intimidation and a murderous family scheme.
The Lodge family's murder mystery runs alongside the African-American neighbors' harassment and the community's collective unrest.
Family life, suburban etiquette, and insurance-related plotting are framed against gruesome death and escalating household betrayal.
The 1959 community's hostility toward its first African-American family contrasts with its self-image as an all-white paradise.
