Critics broadly viewed the film as a rote, morally uncritical vigilante remake whose jokey tone and gun-violence framing were badly timed.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Paul Kersey transforms from surgeon and witness to emergency-room violence into an armed hunter of his family's attackers.
Paul's armed campaign is celebrated by media attention while the film's release and reception intersected with debate over American gun culture.
Paul is introduced as a surgeon who repairs victims of violence before becoming a lethal avenger himself.
The film remakes the earlier Death Wish property while retaining its revenge-driven vigilante framework.
