What critics said
Critics broadly found the film courageous, emotionally powerful, and well acted, while noting that its straightforward moral framing can oversimplify the historical material.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The film explicitly follows the real 1942 Vel d'Hiv roundup, its victims, organizers, bystanders, and opponents.
Eleven-year-old Jo and other children anchor the story as their fragile daily life gives way to persecution and detention.
The plot contrasts the support, mockery, trust, escape attempts, and opposition surrounding Jewish families in occupied Paris.
The story moves from Montmartre and the Vélodrome D'Hiver to Beaune-La-Rolande, Vichy, and the Berghof with substantial period reconstruction.
