What critics said
Critics broadly found the film visually striking and occasionally entertaining but ultimately generic, shallow, and ineffective as supernatural horror.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Sarah Winchester's seven-story house contains hundreds of rooms, misleading passages, and seemingly irrational architectural features that dominate the film's imagery.
The plot draws on Sarah Winchester, the Winchester fortune, and the real Winchester Mystery House while introducing vengeful ghosts and paranormal motives.
Sarah's relentless construction is explicitly framed as an asylum or prison intended to contain hundreds of hostile spirits.
The ghosts target the Winchester family because of deaths associated with the rifles underlying its fortune.
