What critics said
Critics and audiences broadly regard it as a beloved, expertly performed Soviet romantic comedy whose optimistic charm coexists with a sharp critique of standardized urban life.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Zhenya mistakes a Leningrad apartment for his Moscow home because the street, building, apartment, key, and interior are effectively identical.
A drunken New Year's journey accidentally places Zhenya in Nadia's apartment and creates the central relationship.
The friends' annual bathhouse gathering and the New Year's Eve setting frame the film's comic displacement and romantic renewal.
The identical urban architecture becomes both the source of farce and a socially critical image of soulless Soviet uniformity.
