What critics said
Critics broadly found the film heartfelt and charming in concept, while divided over its contrived plotting and Steve Martin's deliberately muted dramatic performance.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The plot directly updates George Eliot's Silas Marner, transferring its orphan-child and guardianship conflicts into modern small-town America.
Michael's isolation and betrayal give way to an intense commitment to Mathilda after he adopts her.
Michael must defend his relationship with Mathilda when her biological father returns seeking custody.
Steve Martin plays Michael as a withdrawn and serious figure rather than his customary exuberant comic type.
