What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The child Annette is represented through a puppet, while staged musical numbers and overt performance continually interrupt naturalistic realism.
Henry and Ann’s public careers shape their relationship, and Annette’s exceptional talent becomes entangled with show-business attention.
Stand-up comedy, opera, pop-inflected musical sequences, surreal spectacle, and marital violence coexist within the same heightened register.
Annette’s unusual abilities transform her from a mysterious child into a public attraction whose identity is shaped by adult ambition.
