What critics said
Critics broadly praised Amer as a visually stunning, visceral, distinctive giallo-inspired experiment, while noting that its abstract, aesthetic-first approach can alienate viewers seeking a conventional story.
What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The film foregrounds saturated imagery, close-ups, sharp editing, and sound-driven bodily sensation over dialogue and plot explanation.
Young, teenage, and adult Ana are presented through three defining moments rather than a continuous conventional storyline.
Ana's carnal search, fantasies, exposed body, razor, gloves, and fear of being silenced shape the film's central experience.
The production uses vibrant colors, fetishistic objects, stylized menace, and heightened suspense associated with classic giallo.
