What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Adam enters rap battles and learns the social rules, rivalries, and verbal aggression of the battle-rap scene.
The film uses offensive jokes and contentious battles to interrogate cultural sensitivity rather than avoiding provocation.
English major Adam initially approaches battle rap as thesis material, then becomes personally involved in its competitive world.
The rap battles and Adam's academic project repeatedly test who may use certain language and who gets to define its meaning.
