What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
Angélique is betrothed to the older, scarred Comte de Peyrac for her family's survival and gradually falls in love with him.
Joffrey's scientific mining practices and unconventional life are recast as sorcery by the ambitious archbishop and threatened by Louis XIV.
After Joffrey's arrest, Angélique confronts court intrigue, assassination attempts, and the Paris underworld largely on her own.
The story moves from the Poitou marshlands and aristocratic Toulouse to the royal court and dark Parisian criminal milieu.
