What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The black-and-white cinematography renders the village, haunted forest, spirits, and kratts as stark surreal images.
Villagers routinely bargain with the devil, command kratts, encounter spirits, and accept werewolves as part of daily survival.
Estonian pagan and European Christian mythologies coexist as competing sources of souls, miracles, and spiritual authority.
The villagers steal obsessively from one another, the manor, spirits, and religious powers while entrusting their labor to soulless kratts.
