What critics said

What sets it apart
May contain story progression spoilers
The framing premise distinguishes Sherlock Holmes's celebrated image from his eccentric, vulnerable private life.
Billy Wilder and I. A. L. Diamond treat Holmes and Watson as flawed people while retaining the investigation structure.
The case moves from a vanished husband to monks, covert naval experiments, six missing midgets, and the Loch Ness monster.
Watson's private journals and the opening of his deposit box frame the narrative as material withheld from public knowledge.
